In Im Kwon-Taek’s Sopyonje I believe that the patriarchal structure of the nuclear family is lost. Many aspects of the film, tell me that this is not a film about love or family but a film about success. We learn in the film that Yubong was kicked out of his singing school because he slept with Chuwol and he was never able to realize his dream. By raising two children Dongho and Songwha, Yubong is able to transfer his energy and making the two of them into successful singers in which he always wanted for himself. He abuses them, yells at them and allows them to live in poverty. He treats them like his minions instead of his children. As a patriarchal figure he is supposed to be caring and teaching his children how to gain successful in all aspects of life. I feel as if his bad behaviour such as drinking, physical abuse, anger management issues all relate to his grief and sadness that he was never able to reach the success with his singing.
But Songwha had no manners for pouring drinks which is what her father should have taught her. They never have enough energy to sing and they are vagabonds, begging for food and house squatting. Even at the ending of the film when Songwha encounters Yubong’s drawing friend. She says “I have a long way to go before I can please my father”, no matter how he treated her she continues to have this unconditional love for her father. The classic patriarch has similar ideals for his children such as wanting success, money and marriage for his children but I doubt that he would go to the same despicable psychotic lengths as Yubong did to Songwha to fulfill his dreams and ignoring those of his children.
