Our school

‘Our school’ was documentary style film by MyeongJoon Kim in 2007. This film includes the story of lives of ethnic Korean students in Hokkaido, Japan. According to the report, this film about 90,000 viewer admissions in South Korean domestic markets.
Unlike the other films we watched in this class, the film ‘our school’ were filmed in documentary style, which was interesting. Personally, documentary films give more lessons to the audience, and it directly shows the director’s purpose of filming. As a student who wants to become a documentary producer, screening the documentary film was touched my heart more than the other films like blockbuster films, or romance films, etc. Kim Myeongjoon, the director of this film actually stayed about 3 years and 5 months in Hutkaido Chosun School to film this documentary. Filming and editing the documentary is harder than making other movies, the audience will receive and understand the film based on how the director edits the film.

In this film, several interviews from students in Hotkaido Chosun School are shown, which shamed into me. What surprised me the most while watching the interviews were the fact that their patriotism of the homeland was higher than me. In the film, the word I could hear the most from
students’ interview was ‘our’,
and even the title of the film includes
the word ‘our’. Whenever I hear the word ‘our’ from students’ interview, the question I had was, whether this film targets audience from North Korea or South Korea? The fact that this school was built by 1st generation of Jail-dongpo (Japan-Korean immigrants) surprised me. As mentioned above, as a one nation’s citizen, I don't think I have much patriotism of my country than students from Hotkaido Chosun School and their parents. Moreover, students in Hotkaido Chosun School try to speak Korean and make the restrictions of speaking only in Korean by themselves. Also, teachers from the Hotkaido Chosun School try to learn more Korean to teach fluent in Korean to students. The efforts of the students and the teachers from the Hottkaido Chosun School made ‘our school’ to them. An impressive scene of this film was the last part of the documentary, the day of the high school graduation ceremony. The camera used ‘medium shot’ to film each students’ face during their speech, and I could see that they wrote their speech truly, and their tears were from the bottom of the heart. Even though it would have been hard for the students from Hotkaido Chosun School to find their own identities, their efforts brought the tears from the audiences.
