In all honesty, as much as I
dislike movies for being tacky and predictable, I enjoy movie with a lot of
meaning in visual patterns. My Sassy Girl has a lot of patterns, and the most
obvious to me would be the use of colour.
This film had three dominant
colours: blue, red, and green. These colours were used in the text preceding
each segment of the film; ‘First Half’ is written in blue, ‘Second Half’ is
written in red, and ‘Overtime’ is written in green.
Other areas in which the colours
were used was in the clothing worn. Often times the characters were wearing the
colour blue, such as Gyeon-woo for a large majority of the film. There are
times where the characters are wearing red clothes as well. And the girl wore the
most vibrant green when Gyeon-woo tried to ‘woo’ her on the street. Often times
the colours would be coordinated by the couple. What was the purpose of
coordinating the colours? Did it show that they were on the same page in
regards to their relationship? Did it show that they were interested in each
other?
The colours are also used in the
setting. It is evident in the scene where the soldier takes the couple hostage.
In this scene, the soldier is lit with a green light, the girl is lit with red
and blue lights and Gyeon-woo is lit with a blue light.
The director also uses warm and
cool tones as the setting. I guess this could show the almost double sided
personality of the girl, sometimes fierce, hot, and wild, and other times cool,
calm and collected. In the scene to the left, above, there is a very 'cool' feel. In the scene to the left, below, the orange tones make it feel warm.
